Precisely cut forms emerge from the lacquered masonite surface, creating subtle shifts between positive and negative space as the light changes throughout the day.

Rather than relying on expressive gesture or colour, Dusépulchre constructs a quiet visual rhythm through proportion, repetition and carefully balanced forms. Rooted in the tradition of Constructivism and geometric abstraction, the work demonstrates his remarkable ability to transform simple geometric elements into compositions of striking visual complexity.

Francis Dusépulchre (1934–2013) was a self-taught Belgian painter and sculptor who moved, around 1969, from an early surrealist figuration toward minimalist, constructed abstraction. The critic Robert Rousseau dubbed him a 'shadow-shower' for the way he let incisions and taut threads catch and release light across his panels. His monumental integrations can be found at Le Grand-Hornu and the Musée de Mariemont.

Details

Medium: Lacquered masonite

Date: n.d.

Signature: Signed on the reverse

Dimensions: 101 × 70.5 × 4.5 cm

This artwork forms part of the maurice verbaet collection and can be viewed in our showroom at Volkstraat 58, Antwerp.
