Paul Van Hoeydonck (1925–2025) was a co-founder of the Antwerp avant-garde group G58 and became internationally known for his Space Art of the 1960s. In 1971, the crew of Apollo 15 placed his sculpture 'Fallen Astronaut' on the Moon, in tribute to astronauts and cosmonauts who had died in the exploration of space — still the only artwork ever installed beyond Earth.

Details

Material: Gouache and ink on paper

Dimensions: 320 × 242 mm

Signed and dated: bottom left hand corner

Exhibitions: Maurice Verbaet Gallery – Art Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium — 11/12/2025–14/12/2025 Publications: Jan Ceuleers, Paul Van Hoeydonck, Antwerpen, Pandora Publishers, 2011, p. 80 & p. 281.

This artwork forms part of the maurice verbaet collection and can be viewed in our showroom at Volkstraat 58, Antwerp.
