Description
Danse / Petit torse beautifully illustrates André Willequet's unique ability to evoke the human body through abstraction. Reduced to a series of softly modelled volumes, the sculpture suggests movement, posture and emotion without relying on descriptive detail. The rounded forms create a harmonious rhythm that appears both monumental and intimate, inviting the viewer to experience the work from multiple angles.
Throughout his career, Willequet sought a balance between organic vitality and sculptural simplicity, allowing the material itself to convey expression. Willequet (1921–1998) studied sculpture under Oscar Jespers at La Cambre, and his encounters with Zadkine, Brancusi and Henry Moore during his travels through France and England shaped a sensibility that balanced material rigour with contemplative emptiness, informed in part by his interest in Eastern spirituality.
