Description

Cast in bronze and titled after the curved form of a shell, 'Conque' is a rounded, organic sculpture with an extensive exhibition history, having appeared in group shows from Anderlecht's 'Jardin des Sens' in 2017 to the recent 'Shapes & Spaces: Post-War Belgian Sculptures' in Brussels.

It was made in 1956, early in André Willequet's career, before his work moved fully into abstraction. Willequet (1921–1998), trained by Oscar Jespers at La Cambre and shaped by encounters with Zadkine, Brancusi and Henry Moore during his travels, worked equally in bronze, stone and wood, and his sculptures are held today in museum collections across Belgium.
