Description

Created during Paul Van Hoeydonck's formative years, Musica reveals the artist's fascination with rhythm, movement and abstraction long before his internationally acclaimed sculptural practice. Dynamic black linear structures intersect vibrant fields of blue, red and green, transforming the pictorial surface into an energetic visual composition reminiscent of a musical score.

Rather than depicting sound directly, Van Hoeydonck translates the experience of rhythm into a language of gesture and colour. Horizontal bands create a pulsating cadence, while bold circular accents introduce moments of visual emphasis, allowing the eye to move continuously across the composition.

Paul Van Hoeydonck (1925–2025) studied art history in Antwerp before turning to painting, moving within a few years into geometric abstraction and co-founding the Antwerp avant-garde collective G58 with Jef Verheyen in 1958. The dawn of the Space Age redirected his imagination toward planets, cities and astronauts, and in 1971 the crew of Apollo 15 placed his sculpture 'Fallen Astronaut' on the Moon — still the only artwork ever installed beyond Earth.
