Description
Pierre Célice developed an unmistakable abstract language in which gestural drawing, colour and rhythmic structure merge into compositions of remarkable vitality. This work demonstrates his ability to balance spontaneity with careful orchestration.
Bold black forms establish a dynamic architectural framework while energetic linear marks introduce movement and visual tension. Despite its apparent freedom, every gesture contributes to an underlying sense of harmony.
Pierre Célice (1932–2019) abandoned early law studies for drawing and painting under the guidance of Henri Hayden. Working in the early 1970s in Peter Bramsen's Paris lithography studio, where he crossed paths with CoBrA artists Bram van Velde, Pierre Alechinsky, Asger Jorn and Karel Appel, Célice broke with figuration to develop his mature language of cut and layered coloured paper over gestural paint. His work entered the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
