Description

Created during the final decade of the artist's career, this composition reflects Célice's mature confidence in gesture and structure. Broad painted surfaces interact with incisive linear elements, producing a rhythmic balance between order and improvisation.

Rather than seeking geometric precision, Célice allows each brushstroke to retain its individuality. The surface records the physical act of painting, giving the composition an immediacy that remains central to its appeal.

Célice (1932–2019) had his first success at the Galerie Simone Badinier in the 1950s before turning fully to abstraction in the early 1970s, developing a distinctive vocabulary of cut, layered coloured paper set over gestural acrylic. His paintings are held in the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the French national contemporary art fund.
