Description

This large-scale composition highlights Pierre Célice's fascination with layering, construction and visual rhythm. Painted passages interact with collaged paper elements to create a surface that is simultaneously painterly and architectural.

Colour fields, gestural marks and structural forms are carefully balanced, producing a composition that oscillates between spontaneity and control. The incorporation of collage introduces both physical depth and conceptual complexity, enriching the painting's tactile presence.

Pierre Célice (1932–2019) abandoned early law studies for drawing and painting under the guidance of Henri Hayden. Working in the early 1970s in Peter Bramsen's Paris lithography studio, where he crossed paths with CoBrA artists Bram van Velde, Pierre Alechinsky, Asger Jorn and Karel Appel, Célice broke with figuration to develop his mature language of cut and layered coloured paper over gestural paint. His work entered the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
