Description

This composition reveals Célice's remarkable sensitivity to balance and proportion. Broad painted forms are interrupted by vigorous linear elements, creating an energetic framework that appears simultaneously ordered and spontaneous.

Rather than relying on illusionistic depth, the artist activates the picture plane through the interaction of colour, gesture and rhythm. Each mark retains its individual presence while contributing to the coherence of the whole.

Célice (1932–2019) had his first success at the Galerie Simone Badinier in the 1950s before turning fully to abstraction in the early 1970s, developing a distinctive vocabulary of cut, layered coloured paper set over gestural acrylic. His paintings are held in the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the French national contemporary art fund.
