Description

Created at the beginning of a particularly productive decade, this painting illustrates Pierre Célice's growing confidence in combining gestural abstraction with structural clarity. Bold painterly forms establish a strong compositional framework while remaining fluid and spontaneous.

Rather than separating drawing from painting, Célice integrates both into a unified visual language in which line, colour and texture continuously interact. The resulting composition conveys movement without sacrificing balance.

Pierre Célice (1932–2019) abandoned early law studies for drawing and painting under the guidance of Henri Hayden. Working in the early 1970s in Peter Bramsen's Paris lithography studio, where he crossed paths with CoBrA artists Bram van Velde, Pierre Alechinsky, Asger Jorn and Karel Appel, Célice broke with figuration to develop his mature language of cut and layered coloured paper over gestural paint. His work entered the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
