Description

This painting captures a pivotal moment in Célice's artistic development, where expressive gesture begins to merge with a more pronounced structural discipline. Dynamic brushwork interacts with carefully organised forms, creating a composition that remains both intuitive and deliberate.

The subtle tension between spontaneity and order gives the work its distinctive visual energy. Rather than imposing a single interpretation, Célice allows the composition to unfold gradually, rewarding sustained attention.

Célice (1932–2019) had his first success at the Galerie Simone Badinier in the 1950s before turning fully to abstraction in the early 1970s, developing a distinctive vocabulary of cut, layered coloured paper set

over gestural acrylic. His paintings are held in the collections of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the French national contemporary art fund.
