Description

Created after an original model by André Willequet, Rochefort is a striking sculptural edition that embodies the artist's lifelong fascination with the expressive power of form. Rooted in the language of post-war Belgian abstraction, the work balances strength and elegance through its vertical composition and richly textured surface. Although abstract, the sculpture evokes a monumental presence. Its layered planes and rough, tactile finish reveal Willequet's characteristic approach to sculpture: one in which material, gesture and rhythm become inseparable.

The edition preserves the vitality of the original while making this important work accessible to a contemporary audience. Suitable for both interior and exterior settings, Rochefort offers a timeless dialogue between architecture, light and space, reflecting Willequet's enduring contribution to modern Belgian sculpture.

André Willequet (1921–1998) trained under Oscar Jespers at La Cambre in Brussels, and his travels brought him into contact with Ossip Zadkine, Henri Laurens and Constantin Brancusi in France, and Henry Moore in London. Working across stone, wood and bronze with equal fluency, he developed a lyrical, meditative abstraction, and his sculptures are held in museum collections throughout Belgium.
