The star has long occupied a central place in Paul Van Hoeydonck's visual imagination, symbolising exploration, energy and the infinite possibilities of space. In Stermotief, sharp coloured rays radiate from a compact geometric core, creating a composition that appears both perfectly balanced and in constant expansion.

Executed with remarkable precision, the work anticipates the cosmic themes that would later define much of the artist's sculptural practice.

Van Hoeydonck (1925–2025) joined the Formes group in 1956 and co-founded G58 in Antwerp two years later, marking his shift from figuration into geometric abstraction. He is internationally best known for 'Fallen Astronaut', the aluminium sculpture placed on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 15 in 1971 in tribute to astronauts and cosmonauts who died in the exploration of space.
