Description
The largest of this trio of neoprene-and-copper studies, dating to 1985–86, this sculpture demonstrates Tapta's characteristic pairing of soft, dark rubber with the warmer tone and rigidity of copper.
The Polish-born sculptor Maria Wierusz-Kowalski, known as Tapta (1926–1997), settled in Belgium after the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 and trained in weaving at La Cambre, Brussels. Her transition from textile to industrial rubber in the 1980s marked a radical shift in her practice, one she also passed on to her students as head of La Cambre's workshop between 1976 and 1990.
