Description
Signed with a monogram and dated 1964, this ink and pencil drawing dates from the decade in which André Willequet's sculptural language matured into its distinctive austere abstraction.
Willequet (1921–1998) trained under Oscar Jespers at La Cambre in Brussels, and his encounters with Ossip Zadkine, Henri Laurens and Constantin Brancusi in France, followed by a scholarship period in London where he met Henry Moore, shaped a sensibility that balanced material rigour with contemplative emptiness.
Equally accomplished in stone, wood and bronze, Willequet is recognised today as one of the key figures of Belgian lyrical abstraction, with pieces held in museums across the country.
